JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Capital Markets in Africa — Today the South Africa equity markets began on positive district after all indices closed in bullish mood. Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) All Share index ended 0.89 percent or 435.96 points lower to close at 49,366.60 points. The JSE Top 40 index also soared by 362.64 points or 0.83 percent to end at 43,813.06 points.
On the positive momentum path, the JSE Financial sector index added 1.44 percent or 609.59 points to end at 43,051.26 points. Both Industrial and industrial 25 sector indexes higher by 0.86 percent to close at 71,395.82 points and rose by 0.83 percent to settle at 63,545.19 points respectively. The resource index surged by 0.04 percent or 13.60 points to close at 35,313.71 points and the Gold mining sector index advanced by 3.03 percent or 27.27 points with a closing level of 928.12 points.
Looking at the market strength/breath (measured as ratio of gainers to losers), the market recorded 208 price gainers, 132 price losers and 54 remained unchanged, hence market strength/breathe closed positive. Out of the top gainers was Renergen Limited, whose shares rose by 13.33 percent to end at ZAR 17.00 after investors exchanged 28 shares. Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited soared 11.23 percent after traded 2,365,679 shares, boosting the share price to ZAR 10.00. Wescoal Holdings Limited also jumped by 7.41 percent to end at ZAR 1.45 after investors traded 50,372 shares. Value Group Limited advanced by 6.35 percent to end at ZAR 3.35 after exchanged a total of 600 shares. Grand Parad Investment Limited climbed by 5.88 percent to end at ZAR 5.40 after trading 81,164 shares.
On the losers’ table was Rockwell Diamond Incorporation whose shares fell to ZAR 2.00 after 10,194 shares were bought and sold, resulting in a fall of 10.71 percent. Comair Limited sagged by 8.96 percent to close at ZAR 3.05, after 81,752 shares were traded. Amalgamated Electric Corporation Limited slumped by 8.36 percent to trade at ZAR 2.52 a share after investors bought and sold 3,300 shares. Tiso Blackstar Group also slumped by 7.14 percent to trade at ZAR 9.75 after 28,471 deals. After investors bought and sold 44,150 shares, Kibomining fell by 6.98 percent to trade at ZAR 1.20.
On the currency markets front, the South rand was stronger against US dollar at ZAR 13.5251 by adding 0.45 percent and against British pound to trade at ZAR 20.8141 after gaining 0.27 percent. The rand gained 0.45 percent against the Euro to close at ZAR 15.2914.
